Taking Tan Dun’s Buddha Passion as its object of study, this article explores the structural reconstruction of Buddhist sonic materials and the process of cultural identity formation after their incorporation into the large-scale symphonic choral genre from the perspective of cultural hybridity theory, combining musical analysis with international critical reception. The study finds that materials such as khöömii singing, indigenous vocal styles, Buddhist ritual instruments, the Sutra Theme, and the Great Compassion Mantra Theme do not function merely as decorative cultural elements. Instead, they acquire new structural functions through thematic development, timbral organization, and symphonic texture. The hybridity of Buddha Passion is not manifested in the simple juxtaposition of Chinese and Western musical elements, but rather in the translation of Buddhist ritual practices into symphonic structures. Meanwhile, international critics have interpreted the work through discourses such as “Eastern spirituality,” “Buddhist ritual,” and “cross-cultural dialogue,” contributing to the formation of a recognizable Chinese musical signifier. Through the process of intercultural dissemination and reception, the work further participates in the construction of contemporary Chinese musical cultural identity.
