음악으로 듣는 정체성 서사: 영화 《헤어질 결심》의 음악적 서사 분석

영화《헤어질 결심》의 음악은 등장인물의 내면, 정체성 및 관계성에 관한 다층적인 음악 서사를 드러낸다. 본고는 이 영화에서 사용된 OST《서래》, 대중가요《안개》, 말러의 교향곡 제5번 4악장 아다지에토가 이미지와 대사 등 다른 영화적 서사의 요소들과 상호작용 하면서 어떻게 주요 등장 인물인 서래와 해준의 정체성, 감정, 관계를 드러내는지를 분석하였다.
《안개》는 타인의 시선을 통해 다양하게 구성되는 서래의 다면적이고 유동적인 정체성과 연관된다. 영화에서는 내재적 음악으로 등장하여 시점을 형성하고 비내재적 음악으로 전환되는 트랜스-디제시스 음악 방식이 다수 사용되는데, 이런 음악적 방식은 서래와 해준과 관련된 다층적 서사를 구축하는 데 기여한다. OST 《서래》의 선율은 다른 OST에서 부분적으로 반복되거나 변형되어 등장하면서 서래의 주체적 정체성을 강조한다.
말러의 아다지에토는 산에서 이루어지는 상승과 추락이라는 이미지와 겹치면서 해준의 정체성 및 감정의 붕괴를 음악적으로 상징한다. 하지만 영화에서 아다지에토의 마지막 사용은 남성 정체성의 수직적 붕괴가 아니라 사랑의 상호 감응을 통한 정체성의 수평적 해체를 암시한다. 이때 사용되는 초반부 선율의 주요 음정 구조는 OST《서래》의 선율과도 부분적으로 유사성을 지닌다. 이를 통해 해준과 서래는 서로를 닮아가는 관계성을 드러내며, 말로 표현되지 않는 서로를 향한 감정과 애정을 암시한다.
궁극적으로《헤어질 결심》의 음악은 서래와 해준의 정체성과 관계의 과정, 즉 붕괴, 전환, 모방, 되기 등의 과정을 소리를 통해 감각하게 하는 영화의 중요한 서사적 장치로 작용한다.

The music of the film Decision to Leave presents a multi-layered musical narrative of the inner worlds, identities, and relationships of its characters. This paper analyzes how the original sound track(OST) Seo-rae, the popular song Mist, and the fourth movement “Adagietto” from Mahler’s Symphony No. 5 interact with images, dialogue, and other cinematic narrative elements to reveal the identities, emotions, and relationship of the main characters, Seo-rae and Hae-jun.
The song Mist is associated with Seo-rae’s multifaceted and fluid identity, which is constructed in diverse ways through the gaze of others. In this film, the music frequently appears as diegetic sound that forms a point of view and then shifts into non-diegetic sound, which can be called a trans-diegetic mode. This musical strategy contributes to constructing the film’s multilayered narrative concerning Seo-rae and Hae-jun. The melody of the OST Seo-rae is partially repeated or transformed within other OST pieces in the soundtrack, thereby emphasizing Seo-rae’s subjective agency and identity.
Mahler’s Adagietto musically symbolizes Hae-jun’s collapse of identity and emotinal breakdown by aligning with the images of ascent and fall in the mountains, However, the final use of the Adagietto in the film signifies not a vertical collapse of masculine identity, but rather a horizontal dissolution of identity through the mutual resonance of love. The structure of some intervals in the opening melody exhibits partial similarity to that of the OST Seo-rae, suggesting a growing resemblance between Hae-jun and Seo-rae, thereby implying an unspoken resonance of emotions and affection for one another.
Ultimately, the music in Decision to Leave functions as an important narrative device that allows the audience to aurally perceive the processes of identity and relational transformation between Seo-rae and Hae-jun―processes of disintegration, transformation, imitation, and becoming.
