인공지능과 한국전통음악


본 연구는 한국 전통음악의 현황, 인공지능(AI) 작곡과 한국 전통음악의 융합 가능성을 탐구하며 이를 통하여 전통음악의 보존과 현대화라는 과제를 해결할 방안을 모색한다. 한국 전통음악은 우리나라의 독특한 음악 양식으로 이루어진 음악문화로서 한국 사람의 음악이지만 현대화와 서구화의 흐름 속에서 대중적 관심이 감소하고 있다. 한편 대중음악은 AI 음악 작곡 분야를 통하여 새로운 패러다임을 제시하며 창작 도구로서의 역할을 활용하여 영역을 확장하고 있다.
본 연구에서는 AI 작곡 기술의 발전 과정과 대표적인 AI 작곡 프로그램들의 특징을 분석하였다. 또한, 국립국악원의 ‘인공지능을 통한 600년 전 음악 복원’ 프로젝트와 AI를 활용한 ‘거대국악데이터 독립 연구단 인공지능 음악회’의 사례를 통해 AI와 전통음악의 융합을 통한 보존과 현대화의 가능성과 실제 적용 사례를 알아보았다.
결론적으로, AI는 전통음악의 음원과 악보 데이터를 디지털화하여 훼손을 방지하고 보존하며 디지털화된 데이터를 통하여 현대적 감각을 가미한 새로운 창작물을 생성할 수 있다. 이는 전통음악의 보존과 현대화를 촉진하며, 젊은 세대와의 문화적 거리를 좁히는 데 기여할 수 있다. 동시에, AI는 인간 작곡가의 감성과 창의성을 대체할 수 없으며, 인간과의 협업을 통해 서로의 강점을 보완하는 방향으로 활용되어야 한다. 본 연구는 인공지능 기술이 한국 전통음악의 보존과 현대화를 위한 혁신적 도구로 자리 잡을 가능성을 제시하며, 전통음악의 지속 가능한 발전을 위한 새로운 방향성을 제시한다.

This study explores the potential convergence of artificial intelligence(AI) composition technology and Korean traditional music, seeking solutions to address the dual challenges of preserving and modernizing traditional music. Korean traditional music, with its thousands of years of history and cultural value, has been experiencing a decline in public interest amid the trends of modernization and Westernization. Meanwhile, popular music is presenting a new paradigm in the field of AI music composition, leveraging its role as a creative tool to expand its domain.
This study analyzes the evolution of AI composition technologies—including rule-based composition, probabilistic methods, machine learning, and deep learning—as well as the features of representative AI composition programs such as AIVA, Soundful, and Suno AI. Furthermore, practical applications and implications are discussed through case studies, including the National Gugak Center’s “Restoration of 600-Year-Old Music Through AI” project and the “AI Music Concert” by the Giant Gugak Data Independent Research Team.
In conclusion, AI can digitize traditional music's audio and score data, preventing temporal degradation and preserving these valuable assets. Furthermore, digitized data enables the creation of new works that blend modern sensibilities with traditional styles. This approach fosters the preservation, popularization, and globalization of traditional music while bridging cultural gaps with younger generations. However, AI cannot replicate the emotional depth and creativity of human composers. Instead, it should be utilized collaboratively to complement human strengths. This study highlights the potential of AI as an innovative tool for preserving and modernizing Korean traditional music and provides new directions for its sustainable development.
