윌리엄 웨그만의 연출사진과 ‘상상적인 것의 영역’

윌리엄 웨그만은 대형 폴라로이드를 사용하여, ‘만 레이’ 등 자신의 애완견을 주인공으로 작업하는 사진가이다. 특별히 웨그만의 작품을 연구하는 학자들은 개를 모델로 의인화하여 다소 불합리하고 터무니없어 보이게 제작한 그의 제작 의도에 주목한다. 즉 여기서 도출되는 ‘웃음’ 에 주목하면서, 이는 근본적으로 ‘기존의 체계에 저항하기 위한 우회적 사용, 또는 정치적인 문제, 개인적인 것 혹은 기성세대 등이 가지고 있는 기존의 체계에 대한 거부’라고 판단한다. 이러한 반예술적 예술의 기원은 마르셀 뒤샹에 의한 것으로서, 로잘린드 크라우스는 뒤샹의 예술에서 밖으로 터져 나오는 약간 정신 나간 듯한 황당한 폭소는 시각 기호의 가장 기본적인 형태, 즉 가장 일반적으로 알려진 형태를 다르게 숙고하면서 진중한 예술을 발생시키는 뒤샹의 결정이 가져온 코믹한 특질이라고 언급했다. 본 연구는 이러한 로잘린드 크라우스의 연구를 확장하여 웨그만의 작품을 연구하고 1970년대 이후 그가 사진 이용자에서 사진가로서 점진적으로 변하는 예술가의 위치를 작품과 함께 확인한다. 결국 웨그만의 위트는 시대적 예술을 대변하며 단순한 시각적 농담을 넘어 인간에 대한 깊은 이해와 애정을 기반으로 하여 관객에게 웃음과 동시에 위로를 제공하고, 예술이 지닐 수 있는 진정한 인간애적 가치임을 상기시킨다.

William Wegman is a photographer who uses large-format Polaroids to create works featuring his dogs, such as Man Ray, as the central subjects. Scholars who specifically study Wegman’s works focus on his intention to anthropomorphize dogs, creating images that appear somewhat absurd and nonsensical. They emphasize the ‘laughter’ derived from these works, interpreting it fundamentally as an ‘indirect means of resisting existing systems, or as a rejection of political issues, personal matters, or established norms held by previous generations.’ The origin of such anti-artistic art can be traced back to Marcel Duchamp. Rosalind Krauss noted that the slightly mad and absurd laughter erupting from Duchamp’s art stems from his decision to seriously reconsider the most basic forms of visual signs those most—commonly known—thus generating a comic quality that emerges from serious art. This study expands on Rosalind Krauss’s research to examine Wegman’s works, observing his gradual transformation from a user of photography to a photographer after the 1970s, along with his artistic position reflected in his works.
Ultimately, Wegman’s wit represents the spirit of contemporary art, transcending mere visual humor to offer both laughter and comfort to the audience through a profound understanding of and affection for humanity, reminding us of the truehumanistic value that art can embody.
